Consultant Dietitian (Formerly NNEdPro Lead Scientific Advisor and Vice-Chair)
Joan is a nutrition and dietetic consultant with special interest in hydration and health and assessments methods for assessing fluid intake. Joan was the British Dietetic Association’s (BDA) first Research Officer and is a past Editor of the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics. Joan chaired the BDA’s Research Interest Group and was a member of the Research Committee. Since qualifying as a dietitian she has been involved in research into obesity, critical care, hydration. protein and energy metabolism. She gained her PhD in 1989 working with John Garrow on body composition and energy expenditure in obesity. Her clinical experience includes obesity, mental health and eating disorders.
Joan has published widely in peer reviewed journals and has presented at several international conferences. She is a co-author of the Oxford Handbook of Nutrition and Dietetics and edited the Manual of Dietetic Practice, 5th Edition. She has taught at Oxford Brookes University and Westminster University where she helped to establish a Masters programme in public health nutrition. Joan has been the Scientific Lead and Vice Chair for NNEdPro, and lectured on nutrition to medical students in Cambridge. In 2012, Joan received the Complete Nutrition Lifetime Achievement Award. Until recently she was a member of the ILSI (Europe) expert group on adequate methodologies for recording fluid and water intake at population level. Joan is a visiting fellow at the Functional Food Centre, Oxford and a visiting researcher at the University of Hertfordshire.
