This response to a recently published Lancet editorial notes the relationship between metabolic health and susceptibility COVID-19 and its related outcomes, with reference to conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. All of these conditions have strong links to both dietary patterns and lifestyle behaviours. This highlights the pressing need for greater education on nutrition within medical curricula, which in the context of COVID-19, has made the importance of increasing nutrition education even clearer.

Elaine Macaninch, Dominic Crocombe, Martin Kohlmeier and Sumantra Ray from the NNEdPro Global Centre of Nutrition and Health provided a rapid response to the recent BMJ paper "Food is medicine: actions to integrate food and nutrition into healthcare" - "Food is more than medicine: Access to appropriately nutritious and healthy food is a basic human right, key to disease prevention and so much more than “medicine”.

We are delighted to publish the first paper in our Food, Mood and Mental Health Special. This is a comprehensive overview of existing evidence for the role of pre/probiotics as a treatment for depression anxiety disorders. Nutritional aspects of psychology and psychiatry are an emerging area rapidly gaining interest. This ‘Food, Mood & Mental Health’ review offers important insights into research warranted to fully substantiate these plausible hypotheses to help us reliably inform practice. |

This paper "Association between plant-based diets and blood pressure in the INTERMAP study" demonstrates that higher adherence to a high-quality plant-based diet, but not an overall plant-based diet, was inversely associated with systolic and diastolic BP. Intakes of vegetables and whole grains explained the inverse associations of a healthy plant-based diet with BP, while intakes of refined grains, sugar-sweetened beverages, and total meat contributed to the direct associations of an unhealthy plant-based diet with BP. |

"Empowering local communities to make lifestyle changes: is the Health Mela a potential solution?" This study suggests that Health Melas are able to identify high rates of modifiable CVD risk factors along with a high proportion of attendees at intermediate to high risk of CVD. Community public health interventions in the style of the Health Mela could be feasible tools for accessing, screening and advising some communities at high risk of CVD. |

This paper "Relationship between maternal body composition during pregnancy and infant’s birth weight in Nairobi informal settlements, Kenya" shows that Total Body Water (TBW) and Fat Free Mass (FFM) have a positive relationship with infants birth weight whilst Fat Mass (FM) does not. TBW, FFM and FM were significantly lower among younger mothers (< 20 years), compared to older mothers (> 20 years), suggesting targeted interventions on improving maternal nutrition in these and similar settings especially among young mothers for improved child health and well-being. |

"Contrasting prenatal nutrition and environmental exposures in association with birth weight and cognitive function in children at 7 years" demonstrates that good nutrition is essential for individual health, a notion that is particular true during pregnancy. We have used a nutrition index, My Nutrition Index, that measures the adequacy of one’s diet relative to the unique nutritional needs of individuals due to, for example, their activity level, dietary restrictions, lifestyle, and body size. |

In Western populations, there is strong evidence to conclude that physical activity of all types and intensities protects against colon, endometrial and breast cancers. "Preventable causes of cancer in Texas by race/ethnicity: insufficient physical activity", shows that minority groups are affected unequally by cancers attributable to insufficient physical activity. Therefore, prevention programmes should incorporate targeted health promotion efforts that are perceptive of race/ethnicity. |
